Pneumatic Rubber Fenders (Yokohama Fenders)

Pneumatic Fender (Yokohama Fender) is designed and manufactured for the harsh marine environment. This fender is made of a synthetic core reinforced rubber sheet with an air-filled interior. It protects the hull of the ship and the quay from damage by absorbing the impact of the ship at berth or mooring. Zhonghaihang’s pneumatic fenders are manufactured by ISO 17357.

Zhonghaihang Shipping Supply’s pneumatic fenders are standardized with two different pressure ratings (50KPA and 80KPA) to meet a wide range of performance needs. Pneumatic fenders generally float on the water surface and act as shock absorbers during ship-to-ship or ship-to-port processes. It maintains energy absorption levels at up to 15 degrees of tilt compression and provides low and uniform hull pressure. Depending on the application, the fender can also be easily deflated, allowing it to be simply reinstalled wherever protection is required.

Pneumatic Rubber Fender

Zhonghaihang’s fenders are available in diameters from 500-4500mm and lengths ranging from 500 to 9000mm, with special size customization options. All fender sizes are available in sling or heavy duty chain and tire net configuration options. For special applications such as submarines, we also offer fenders for submarine fenders. And for color options, our regular color is black, which can also be customized to a gray version.

But it’s worth noting: pneumatic fenders are not the same as airbags, and many people confuse them. Airbags are generally used for ship launching operations and serve a different purpose than fenders.

Pneumatic fender structure

Rubber pneumatic fenders are mainly composed of an outer layer, a reinforced cord layer, an inner layer vulcanized, and other accessories.
Both the outer and inner layers perform according to ISO 17357:2014. Depending on the pressure, they are available in high and low pressure versions:

Fender Pressure Rating

Zhonghaihang offers two pressure classes of yokohama rubber fender, both of which comply with ISO 17357 for internal pressure, pressure resistance and safety valve setting pressure.

Chain and Tire Mesh Fenders

The body of the fender is covered with chain link, wire or fiber mesh. These nets effectively protect the fender from abrasion. Each end of the longitudinal chain, wire or fiber’s is connected using one or two rings, and the rings are connected using zip ties or pull ropes. Typically, these nets also require the use of tires for additional tire protection. At Zhonghaihang, we offer truck tires as well as aircraft tire options. And all fenders come with rings by default, which can be custom designed to function as needed. The default here is the Yokohama fender.

Sling Fenders

The body of the sling fender is not fitted with a protective net. However, it has a reinforced flange area that serves as towing lugs that attach to the outer flange. Each towing lug has a shackle/turnbuckle set.

Compared to standard pneumatic fenders, this fender has a shorter life span. This is due to the fact that the fender body is not effectively guarded and is highly vulnerable to sharp objects/abrasion. Upon request, we can also provide this fender with an external protective structure of rubber ribs for proper protection of the fender.

When used in submarines and government programs, these fenders can be simply adjusted for protection. Fenders with this special feature, also known as submarine fenders, are secured vertically by anchor chains and are connected and fitted with a special flange structure for water injection.

  • In harbors where tides change dramatically
  • Ship-to-ship mooring
  • Offshore platform protection
  • Oil and gas (typical FSRU)
  • Ship-to-shore mooring

fender pneumatic Advantages

Compliance with ISO 17357-1:2014: Zhonghaihang’s pneumatic fenders are manufactured in compliance with ISO 17357.

Low reaction force and hull pressure: our pneumatic fenders generate low reaction force, which can cause less hull pressure and avoid damage to the hull.

Maintains Large Clearance: Pneumatic fenders provide large clearance during ship-to-port and ship-to-ship mooring, avoiding collisions and other problems.

Easy and quick to deploy: Pneumatic fenders are lightweight and can be installed wherever they need to be deployed after deflation.

Low Maintenance: Extremely durable and very low maintenance. An annual air pressure check is all that is required.

Resistance to unfavorable external forces: Pneumatic fenders protect ships and mooring structures from damage by effectively absorbing external impacts.

Long service life: the use of high-strength materials and optimized design can withstand prolonged use and extreme environments, providing a long service life.

Guaranteed energy absorption and reaction force: With the unique design structure, the fender can effectively absorb the impact energy and distribute it evenly. This ensures that the reaction force is within a safe range and avoids damage to the hull and harbor.

Manufacturing Methods for Pneumatic Fenders

At Zhonghaihang, our pneumatic fenders are manufactured using different methods. Among the common ones are molded and wrapped methods, each of which has its specific advantages:

Wrapped Inflatable Rubber Fenders
Wrapped Inflatable Rubber Fenders

The wrapped pneumatic fenders are manufactured by the wrapping process, and their performance follows the ISO 17357 standard. Their price is lower compared to molded pneumatic fenders, but their surface is not as smooth as molded pneumatic fenders. Wrap-around pneumatic fenders can be subdivided into sling-type, chain-type, and tire net-type structures.

Molded Inflatable Rubber Fenders

Unlike the wrap-around pneumatic fenders, the molded fenders are generated using an integrated mold. Its surface is smoother and its performance is more excellent. But the corresponding price is higher than the winding fender. Molded fenders can also be divided into sling type, chain type, and tire net type.
